About Us:

The Foundation of Educational Resources for Mathematics, Achievement, and Technology, F.E.R.M.A.T.

We are a collective of K-12 mathematics instructors, mathematics education professors, mathematics professors, researchers, and other mathematics education stakeholders. Our philosophy is that students need to experience the joy of problem solving. Without joy there is little motivation. Problem solving is the basis of both pure and applied mathematics proficiency. Enriched problems that involve students with deep underlying mathematical concepts engage students, helping them to think, achieve, and grow. Students gain a cohesive understanding of mathematics, instead of trying to memorize or make sense of seemingly disjointed mathematical facts.

Moreover, without reinforcement of the mathematical connections, many students will create their own erroneous connections. This is where the guidance of a knowledgeable instructor can make an enormous difference. Current trends toward marginalizing the role of the teacher (e.g. textbooks and videos that are marketed as “teacher -proof”) are not constructive. Professional development for teachers is thus an integral part of the foundation's goal. Our pedagogical methods involve active students and active instructors.

Our Mission Statement:

The foundation will increase the interest, achievement, technology, and passion of mathematics for all communities. The foundation is committed to Open Educational Resources (OER), Open Access (OA), and Open Source (OS).
